Bernice Auverson, 89, Stanley, formerly of New Town and Minot, died Friday, May 17, 2013, in a Stanley nursing home.

Bernice was born June 9, 1923, to Andrew and Oline (Lerohl) Aardahl on the family farm near White Earth. She was raised in the White Earth area and graduated from White Earth High School in 1941. She then completed her teaching certificate and taught country school for one year north of New Town.

Bernice was united in marriage to Kenneth Auverson on Dec. 20, 1941, in Stanley. They made their home farming and raising cattle along the river bottoms. Bernice and Kenneth moved their family twice due to flooding from the Garrison Dam. In 1945 they moved to Sanish where she stayed home with her children and cared for her mother-in-law. She raised chickens and grew a large garden. She was a wonderful cook and canned her produce from her garden.

In 1953, the family relocated to New Town. Bernice was an entrepreneur and opened Tastee Freeze in 1953, selling just ice cream cones and bottles of pop. Her business continued to grow. She was a compassionate person and was known to provide meals to those who could not afford one. In 1988, after 35 years, they sold the business and she and Kenneth moved to Minot. Kenneth died on July 4, 1998. Bernice then returned to New Town and later entered the Stanley nursing home in 2007.

Bernice loved to sing. She was an accomplished singer and won several talent contests in her earlier years. She continued her love of music by singing for many community events.

She was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church in New Town where she directed the children's choir. She was a member of the Riverview Cemetery Club, New Town Birthday Club, and served on the board of directors for the New Town Nursing Home.

Her family brought the most joy in her life. She cherished spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A proud Norwegian, Bernice enjoyed klub, lefse and Folger's coffee; she passed away on "Syttende Mai" which is Norway's Independence Day. She enjoyed spending time at her cabin in Little Knife, tending her flowers and watching birds.

May God bless the memory of Bernice Auverson.
