A seven-member team is planning an approximately 180-mile round-trip Run To The Border to raise money for the Fisher House Foundation, an organization that helps veterans and military families.
The Fisher House Foundation provides free or low-cost lodging "a home away from a home" for families of veterans and military members receiving treatment at military medical centers.
Joseph Parks, of Minot Air Force Base, formerly of Grand Forks AFB, and six friends are doing the trek to raise the funds in two days.
Besides Parks, others participating in the event are Paul Zwilling, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., formerly of Grand Forks AFB; and Randy Kitzmiller, head organizer, Richard and Heidi Blair, Steve Smith and Dan Lavergne, all of Grand Forks AFB.
The group plans to start the combination run/walk on June 14, leaving from Grand Forks AFB to the Canadian border near Gretna, Manitoba, and then return, ending the run/walk on June 16 at the Grand Forks base. The total run/walk covers nearly 180 miles.
The team has received a contribution of the loan of a 26-foot motor home from Outlet Recreation in West Fargo and Clearwater, Minn., to use for the event.
