Theresia Martwick

March 14, 1930-April 23, 2013

April 25, 2013
Minot Daily News

Theresia (Burgard) Martwick, 83, Minot, was called home to her maker on Tuesday, April 23, 2013, surrounded by her family and lifelong priest friend, Monsignor Senger. She had resided for the past 13 years in the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Marion and Mike Woiwode, and her granddaughter, Michaela.

Theresia Burgard was born March 14, 1930, on the family farm east of Orrin, the daughter of Benhard and Theresa (Volk) Burgard. She attended school for a few years and then stayed home to care for her younger siblings due to their mother's illness.

She later worked on a farm near Balfour, where she met and married Harold Martwick. They were united in marriage on June 28, 1949. They had two children, a daughter, Marion, and a son, Larry, who passed away shortly after birth. They lived and farmed in the Balfour area until moving to Minot in 1965, where Theresia was a homemaker. She and her husband were avid gardeners. Harold passed away Dec. 6, 1985.

Theresia enjoyed doing word search and putting puzzles together with her granddaughter, Jessica, and anyone else who loved to stand for hours and help out. She also loved canning and baking.

Theresia had a great devotion to the Holy Rosary. She spent many years making over 1,000 rosaries and then giving them to her sister, Angie Mitzel, who would then send them to missions, churches or any place in need of rosaries. Theresia suffered many years with health issues, yet remained very strong-willed and determined to watch her youngest granddaughter, Michaela, who Theresia shared a very special bond with, grow up. Theresia never wanted to leave her family, even in her last days.

Theresia was a member of St. Leo the Great Parish, Minot, for 35 years and then relocated to Our Lady of Grace Parish, Minot, for her last 10 years.

Those who shared in her life: daughter, Marion (Mike) Woiwode; granddaughters, Michaela Woiwode, Minot, and Jessica Strandlien, Minot, and grandson, Jason (Vanessa) Strandlien, Minot; five great-grandchildren, Jessica's children, Trevor, Alisha, and Izaac, and Jason's children, Vianne and Leah; with special attention to Theresia's longtime caregiver, Cris Woiwode (Mike's mom, whom Theresia often called mom); sister, Nettie Schneider, Orrin; brothers, John (Mary) Burgard, Page, Christ (Cecilia) Burgard, Towner, Bennie (Darlene) Burgard, Bismarck, Matt (Evie) Burgard, Jamestown; numerous nieces, special attention to Shirley Parizek (Randy) Minot; and numerous nephews and cousins.

Theresia was preceded in death by her parents, Benhard and Theresa Burgard; husband, Harold; infant son, Larry Edward; sisters, Tillie Burgard, Marion Stach, and Angie Mitzel; and brother, Edward Burgard.
