Terrorism struck at the Boston Marathon on Monday, and now the hunt is on for those responsible for the two bombs that killed three people and wounded more than 170.
Monday's explosions near the finish line of the historic race are being investigated as an act of terrorism, according to President Barack Obama, who also stressed Tuesday that authorities do not yet know who is responsible for what he called "a heinous and cowardly act." The blasts occurred seconds apart, spreading smoke and shrapnel through the nearby street.
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel called the bombings a "cruel act of terror," and said the United States will carry out an investigation to determine if it involved "a terror group, foreign or domestic."
It matters little whether those responsible for the bombings are foreign or domestic terrorists. But make no mistake about it, they are terrorists. Every such attack is a direct attempt to spread fear and panic as well as injure and kill innocent civilians. Such attacks obviously cannot be tolerated, and those responsible must be caught, legally convicted and punished to the fullest extent of the law.
We also pause to remember those who have died, and those who have been injured. Our thoughts are with them and their families in this time of crisis.
