Jennette Steen, 84, of Stanley, died Saturday April 13, 2013, in a Minot hospital. Funeral services are Thursday, April 18, at 11 a.m. at Our Saviours Free Lutheran Church in Stanley. Visitation is today, April 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Springan Funeral Home in Stanley. Burial is in Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, rural Coulee.
Jennette was born on the family farm in Sidonia Township, to Christian and Jenny Mahlum, on Dec. 5, 1928. She was raised on the farm and attended country school until she started school in Palermo and then graduated from Stanley High School. After graduation she worked at Red Owl Grocery Store in Stanley as a clerk.
She married Alfred Steen on June 25, 1950. Alfred and Jennette had four children, Carol (Butch) Nelson, Gerry (Marion) Steen, Candace (Bruce) Johnson and Carla (Mike) Smith. The family made their home in Ray until Alfred passed away in 1960.
She then moved to Stanley and worked mostly at grocery stores but also at local cafes, Stanley Hospital and in later years she was an in-home health care provider for elderly women. Jennette was known as a very hard-working, loyal employee with great integrity who loved to make the job fun with co-workers where ever she worked. She met Muller Marmon in 1964 and they were together for years and have one child, Cristi Trulson. They spent much of their time at the river tending a huge garden and canning all the produce in the fall.
Jennette loved to sing and play the piano. When she was younger Jennette and her brother Don would sing in the choir and entertain the neighbors. She was known for riding her bike all over town and enjoyed waving and joking with all the people who would drive by and honk at her. She loved watching her grandchildren, crocheting, embroidery, sewing quilts and patching jeans. Even when it was in style to wear holey jeans and a certain grandchild only wanted one hole fixed, she patched them all.
She loved all her neighbors at her apartment and enjoyed spending the cold winters doing puzzles with them and sitting outside visiting on warm summer evenings. Her cooking, baking and canning skills will be missed as will her wonderful sense of humor and unconditional love and support she gave her children and their families. There was nothing more important to her than family and her unyielding faith in the Lord.
