Dolores A. Placek, 89, of Tioga, N.D., passed away Monday, April 8, 2013, at the Tioga Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 11, 2013, at First Lutheran Church in Tioga, with Pastor Sandy Anderson officiating. Cremation will follow the service and inurnment will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, south of Mandan, at a later date. Dolores Annette Placek was born at Brantford, N.D., Jan. 3, 1924, the daughter of Raymond and Martha (Sherry) Paulson. She was raised at Brantford and educated at Glenfield, N.D., graduating valedictorian of her class in 1941. She continued her education at Jamestown College and the Deaconess School of Nursing in Grand Forks, N.D. With her RN degree in hand, she went to the United States Naval Hospital in Chicago, Ill., where she worked as a Cadet Nurse during the war years. After the war she returned to New Rockford, N.D., to serve as the Eddy County Nurse.

She was united in marriage to Charles W. Placek on Oct. 25, 1947, in New Rockford. To this union three sons were born, Charles, Mark and Toby. The family moved to Tioga in 1955, where Charles worked for the Great Northern Railroad. They had made Tioga their home for many years.

Dolores remained at home while she raised her family, but kept her nursing training keen. She began working at the Tioga Medical Center in the early '60s and was the Director of Nursing from October 1969 until December 1975, and after influencing many young area nurses in the Tioga community, retired in 1981.

Charles preceded her in death in November 2005; she enjoyed living at the Tioga Independent Living Apartments for the past seven years.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Tioga. She loved spending time with family at the family lake home at Wood Lake each summer and loved to fish with the best of them. She enjoyed her flowers and loved spending time with family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She and Charles enjoyed time hunting for agates. Dolores was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for many years.

She is survived by: her sons and their wives; Charles (Karen) Placek, of Bismarck, N.D., Mark (Dorothy) Placek, of Tioga, N.D., Toby (Bonnie) Placek, of Crosby, N.D.; seven grandchildren, Dominik Placek, Derrick (Elisha) Placek, Tonya (Jon) Sigl, Austin (Lacey) Placek, Ashley (Darron) Olson, Kjell (Jen) Placek and Ian Placek; seven great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren, Stacy (Jeremy) Wilson, Gina (Mike) Harvey, and Michele (Sassan) Mouri, and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.

Dolores was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Fulkerson Funeral Home in Tioga today, April 10, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and an hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
