Erik Ramstad Middle School students will not be starting classes in their new school come this fall.
Minot Public Schools superintendent. Mark Vollmer said construction crews have lost a total of 60 construction days due to snow and snow removal and the project is behind schedule. Instead, Vollmer has decided that the students will continue to attend classes at Minot Municipal Auditorium until Thanksgiving. There will be a week-long Thanksgiving break, during which staff will move into the new Ramstad school and set up classrooms. The new Ramstad is under construction along 36th Avenue and 8th Street Northwest.
Vollmer said he met with Minot Mayor Curt Zimbelman last week and received permission to continue occupying the Auditorium through the fall.
Construction on the new Ramstad has been delayed because of a wet fall and heavy snows this winter.
Vollmer said other building projects at Longfellow Elementary, Lewis and Clark Elementary and Jim Hill Middle School are on schedule and students should be able to occupy those facilities on the first day of school .
Vollmer said school board members will be discussing next year's school calendar during the board meeting scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Erik Ramstad Middle School was destroyed by the flood in 2011 and Longfellow Elementary was heavily damaged. Children from those schools have been attending classes at Minot Municipal Auditorium and in portable classrooms on the campus of Longfellow. Lincoln Elementary was also destroyed by the flood and is being replaced by a classroom addition at Longfellow. Students from that school have been attending classes at First Presbyterian Church. A classroom addition is being added at Lewis and Clark to accommodate increased growth in the district. A new gymnasium is under construction at Jim Hill Middle School.
The first of three planned public forums on the school's long-range plans for growth in the district will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Minot High School-Magic City Campus. Vollmer urged all members of the public to attend.
