The International Souris River Board is inviting public comment as it reviews the operating plan for the Souris River.
A public meeting will be held March 20 at 2:30 p.m. in the Viking Room of the Grand International.
A periodic review of the operating plan is required under the 1989 Canada-United States Agreement for Water Supply and Flood Control in the Souris River Basin. Due to unprecedented flooding in the basin in 2011, residents have asked that additional flood protection measures be evaluated beyond what is currently provided under the 1989 agreement.
In February 2012, the board appointed the Souris River Basin Task Force to review the operating plan contained in Annex A of the 1989 agreement. The task force developed a plan of study that describes the research needed to review the operation of the reservoirs and consider additional structural and non-structural measures that could be taken to reduce flooding impacts and improve water supply in the basin.
In addition to the public meeting, a webinar and teleconference is scheduled for March 26 at 7 p.m. For information on participating, contact board secretary Bob White at the North Dakota State Water Commission at 328-2756 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Written comments will also be considered if received by April 7. Comments should be directed to White by phone, email or by mail at Bob White, ISRB Secretary, North Dakota State Water Commission, 900 East Boulevard Avenue, Dept. 770, Bismarck, N.D. 58505-0850.
