The Minot State University men's club hockey team continues to make its case as the best team in the American Collegiate Hockey Association after defeating second-ranked Arizona State University 4-2 on Saturday at Maysa Arena to complete the weekend sweep.
The third-ranked Beavers (26-4) jumped out to the early lead at five minutes, 19 seconds of the first period when Cam McGeough lit the lamp. ASU's Stephen Collins tied the game before Jordan Willert put MSU back in front to end the opening frame.
Eric Herbel scored the lone goal of the second period to put the Beavers up by two. Brett Nespor cushioned MSU's lead in the third, scoring in the opening minute.
"This was a huge win in front of the biggest crowd ever here," MSU coach Wade Regier said in a press release. "The boys fed off the energy of the crowd and it showed. Arizona State is as good as it gets and we showed we can beat anyone."
Wyatt Waselenchuk finished with 34 saves to earn the win.
MSU won all three contests against the Sun Devils this season.
The Beavers head to Bensenville, Ill. for the national tournament starting March 1. MSU - the No. 3 seed - will play the winner of Central Oklahoma and Niagara on March 2 at 11:30 a.m.
