Beulah-Rom Gullekson

Beulah-Rom Gullekson, the daughter of Theodore and Marit (Albertson) Rom, was born July 10, 1914, on the family ranch in Star Township in McHenry County, N.D. She died at the age of 98 years on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at a Minot assisted living center.

Beulah was raised on the family ranch seven and a half miles south of Denbigh, N.D. She attended rural schools in Wintering and Villard districts, and then attended Towner High School for one year before transferring to Minot College High School. She finished high school in three years, graduating from Minot College High School, and went on to attend Minot State Teachers College for two years.

Beulah transferred to the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks and graduated in 1936 with majors in English and Journalism and minors in French and Social Sciences and a background to obtain a teaching certificate in North Dakota high schools. While at UND she was elected to MATRIX, the honorary journalism fraternity, the campus YWCA and Chi Omega. She was selected a member of the Dean's Council, as a Big Sister and as a member of the Dakota Student Staff.

She taught English and Journalism for several years in North Dakota, namely Upham, Granville and Kenmare. During her teaching she was State Director of the Association of Journalism Teachers in Secondary Schools.

On June 14, 1942, Beulah was united in marriage to Ellsworth E. Gullekson in Reno, Nev. In 1950, the couple had their daughter, De Maris. Beulah was very active as a teacher and she and her husband moved around the United States and Canada according to the career movements of Ellsworth with Chevron.

She served on YMCA and YWCA boards, AAUW, Federated Women's Clubs, Friends of the Library, edited papers and manuscripts and did freelance work for newspapers. She did public relations work for the Society of Professional Management Consultants and was Vice President and Financial Officer for their family owned business, Gullekson Associates. She was a longtime member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Velva, the Historical Museum in Towner and is an honorary member of the Pioneer Daughters of Towner.

The Gulleksons founded and support the Gullekson-Rom Engineering Scholarship at UND to provide financial help to students. In 1992, Beulah established the Beulah Rom Gullekson Scholarship Endowment in honor of her mother and father; it provides scholarship money to public relations majors in the School of Communications in the College of Arts and Sciences at UND. She received the honor of the Sioux Award for distinguished service and outstanding achievement by the University of North Dakota.

She loved to travel; the couple took a trip around the world, many trips to Europe, including Norway to visit the birthplace of her father, Theodore, and her grandparents, Ole and Siri Albertson.

Beulah is survived by: her sister, Vera (Melvin) Nelson, sister-in-law, Martha Rom, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellsworth; her daughter, De Maris; sisters, Alma Lee Pederson, Selma (Henry) Lyng, Jennie (Harlow) LeGore, Clara (Richard) Lougee, Theresa (Sigurd) Haaland; brothers, Otto, Malvin, Vernon and Raymond (Barbara) Rom; nieces; nephews; aunts; uncles; other relatives; and her parents.

A Memorial graveside service: Will be held on June 15, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the Union Cemetery, Towner.
