Cradling a monster northern pike put a smile on the face of Gunner Rakness, 6, Burlington. The whopper measured 44 inches long and tipped the scale at 24.8 pounds. The kindergartener pulled the big fish through the ice at Lake Sakakawea Jan. 6. Gunner is the son of Boyd and Jessica Rakness.
“Put a fishing rod in his hands and he is all business. His dad has been taking him ice fishing since he was 3 years old and he goes with his grandpa Don in the boat in the summer,” said Jessica Rakness. “He has taken on the sport of fishing like a true fisherman. It doesn’t matter if he is fishing off the dock, in the boat or on the ice. As long as he has a fishing rod in his hand he is a happy boy. It was just a matter of time before he caught a big one. His smile says it all.”
