Everett Johnson, 99, recently of Sioux Falls, S.D., and a longtime resident near Max, died while battling the flu in nursing care in his Sioux Falls home on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013.

He was born July 17, 1913, in Fargo. A few months later he was adopted by Isaac and Clarissa Johnson, who were homesteading near Benedict.

He was raised on the farm and attended rural schools, graduating from the eighth grade. He attended high school in Velva, but returned to the farm before graduating to allow his younger brother George to finish school and join the Air Force. His mother passed away in 1934, and he and his father continued farming alone. When his father went broke in the Depression, he bought the family farm back with his own savings.

He married Leona D. Jensen of Coleharbor on Oct. 30, 1943. Everett served on local school and township boards and was a founding member of the county water board. He was faithful and active in his church, serving as Sunday School Superintendent of the Methodist Church in Benedict for years. He devoted time to these and many other activities until he began to go south for the winters in 1972 and he felt he could no longer serve as he should. Everett and Leona began wintering in Mesa, Ariz., in 1977, returning to the farm each spring.

Everett was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Leona, in 1985, and his daughter, Beverly, in 1971.

He is survived by: his son, Gordon (Liz Anne), of Augusta, Ga.; his daughter, Marilyn Mitchell (Jay), of Harrisburg, S.D.; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he will be greatly missed but never forgotten in the hearts of his loved ones.

A visitation/viewing will be held Sunday, Jan. 27, from noon to 5 p.m., at Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.

Funeral services: Will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 28, at Faith United Methodist Church, 5900 U.S. Highway 83 N. in Minot.

Burial: Benedict Methodist Cemetery, Benedict.

Memorials: May be directed to the Dow Rummel Care Center or WCTU of North Dakota.

Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot, is in charge of arrangements.
