Oak Park played host to more than its annual light display last month. On Dec. 27, Luke Shattuck and Amber Hanson of Velva were married in an outdoor ceremony next to Christmas in the Park's illuminated doves.
The wedding ceremony for Amber Hanson and Luke Shattuck took place in Oak Park during its annual Christmas in the Park display. The couple was married by Pastor Jeff Hoverson, center, of Living Word Lutheran Church, on Dec. 27 in Minot’s Oak Park.
The minister joining the couple was Pastor Jeff Hoverson of Living Word Lutheran Church, Minot. It was a modest gathering, with the couple's parents and brothers, Luke's grandmother, and a friend who photographed the event in attendance.
When asked why they decided to get married in the park, Amber explained that she felt it made for a good setting.
"I've always liked it, the lights were really pretty," she said. At a crisp but windless 10 degrees, the evening ceremony was a brief one, lasting only about 10 minutes. Avoiding a frosty reception, the group afterward had their celebratory dinner at Primo Restaurant on North Broadway.
Permission for the ceremony was given by the Minot chapter of the Sertoma Club, which has put on Christmas in the Park every year except for last, in light of continuing flood recovery efforts since the event began 13 years ago. Though occasionally requests are made to continue regular group walking activities, this was the first wedding to be held there during the display.
"It's the most out-of-the-ordinary request we've had so far," the club's current secretary, Neil Scharpe, said, adding that he thought it was a nice idea.
The Sertoma Club has had an active chapter in Minot since 1959. Christmas in the Park is one of its three main fundraising events held each year.
