New Town standoff ends

December 20, 2012
Minot Daily News

The barricaded standoff situation in New Town was resolved shortly before 10 a.m. this morning, said FBI spokesman Kyle Loven. There were no injuries.

Michael Jason Smith, 32, was arrested immediately following the situation. Smith has several outstanding warrants in the state of Colorado, Loven said, and "the majority of those warrants were for drug-related offenses."

At this time the connection between Smith and New Town is unknown.

Smith will face new charges here in North Dakota due to the standoff, but as to whether he will be held in the state and charged here or extradited back to Colorado to face charges there will be up to prosecutors from both states.
