Roland Philip Zimmerman, of Noonan, N.D., passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at his home on the farm. He was 90 years old.
A celebration of his life will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Noonan at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 10, 2012. Burial will follow at Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be today, Dec. 9, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Stakston-Martin Funeral Home in Crosby and Monday, one hour before the service, at the church.
Roland was born on July 19, 1922, the son of Philip and Hannah (Nygaard) Zimmerman. He attended Dolphin School #1 in Border Township, and graduated from Noonan High school in 1941.
Roland married Agnes Roness on Oct. 12, 1952, in a double wedding with her sister, Lois Redka, at Zion Lutheran Church. They made their home on the Zimmerman farm near Noonan, where they raised eight children.
Roland raised feeder cattle from 1961 to 1971. He was an active participant in the local farm community, and participated in the National Farmers Organization from 1968 to 1973. In 1971 he started his own trucking company, Zimco Distributors, which transported grain and building materials from state to state.
Roland was a strong proponent of organic farming, and his farm operation was certified organic in 1992. He called it "farming the way the Good Lord intended it."
He was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening, playing pinochle, watching bull riding and rodeos, and following the local oilfield activity. Roland was a cowboy at heart and a true maverick. He will be remembered for his quiet intellect, entrepreneurial spirit, and his steadfast commitment to his family.
Roland was preceded in death by: his parents; his loving wife, Agnes; his sister, Caryl Loucks; and grandson, Edwin Carter.
He is survived by: his eight children, David (Chris) Zimmerman, Connie (Steve) Basaraba, Diane (Sam) Kinser, Karen (David) Verlinde, Dale Zimmerman, Laurie (Bill) Oakes, Linda (Greg) Kline, and Darla (LeRoy) Pilant. He has 15 grandchildren, Michelle (David) Bruzas, Nathan Basaraba, Jared, Kendra and Kyle Carter, Michael, Matthew and Mitchell James, Aaron Zimmerman, Landon, Brian and Leanne Oakes, Jordan and Kayla Kline, Alex Kwamina; and six great-grandchildren.
