Highway semi-pickup collision kills Texas man

December 3, 2012
Minot Daily News

A collision involving a pickup truck and a semi east of Watford City killed a Texas man Saturday night.

The Highway Patrol states Eugene Felker, 77, of Trenton, Texas, was driving a 2006 Toyota pickup truck in heavy fog eastbound on N.D. Highway 73 when a 2005 International semi and trailer driven by David Whitter, 52, of Plantation, Fla., exited a truck pull-out on the south side of the road in front of the pickup. Felker's pickup, which Whitter didn't see due to the heavy fog, hit the semi's trailer on the left side and then the semi itself before coming to a stop. The crash occurred shortly after 8:30 p.m.

It is not known if Felker, who was killed in the crash, was wearing a seat belt, but an airbag did deploy in the pickup. Whitter was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. A third man, Paul Norman, 39, of Roundup, Mont., was being dropped off at the truck pull-out by Whitter to drive another semi already parked there and was not injured.

Estimated damage to the semi driven by Whitter was $10,000, while the pickup truck driven by Felker was totaled.
