A bald eagle keeps watch from atop a high perch near the Garrison Dam Tailrace this past Monday. Several hen pheasants were feeding on berries in a tree about 50 yards distant, apparently unaware of the eagle’s presence. When the eagle finally took flight, the startled pheasants jumped to the high grass beneath their tree and disappeared from sight. The eagle never flew in their direction but the pheasants were taking no chances. Eagles are known to frequent the Tailrace area and can often be seen diving for fish in the open water of the Missouri River.
