Tech Day slated for Dec. 5 at MSU

The 15th annual Technology Day will be held Dec. 5 at Minot State University.

The Department of Business Technology is sponsoring the event, which has been won by Underwood High School for the past four years, according to a press release.

High schools select students for competition in accounting, business law, desktop publishing, document production, business principles, spreadsheet applications and webpage design. For instance, in one competition, participants create a spreadsheet and a chart from given data. For another, participants build a website for an assigned topic. Every school is eligible to enter one student in each of the seven individual events.

The school with the most points for placements in all competitions will receive a sweepstakes trophy. Participating high schools are Berthold, Bowbells, Des Lacs-Burlington, Kenmare, Max, Powers Lake, Surrey, TGU Granville, TGU Towner, Underwood and Westhope. This is the first year Bowbells has competed.

Ben Berg, an MSU business education student, will present "Facebook Tips" and Dan Robert, SRT network operations manager, will talk about SRT network operations during the event, which is sponsored by business faculty members and students from MSU.

Oppegaards honored for adoption efforts

Peter and Anne Oppegaard of Ray received the North Dakota Foster Care Adoptive Family Award earlier this month from the North Dakota Department of Human Services.

The Oppegaards have adopted three children from foster care in the past four years, including siblings in 2011. The family were honored because the Oppegaard children have received tremendous encouragement and support from their adoptive parents and have learned the importance of a family bond.

Last year, 325 adoptions took place in North Dakota. Of the adopted children, 133 had been in foster care prior to adoption; 11 were from foreign countries; 44 were placed for adoption with a private licensed child placing agency; and 137 children were adopted by their stepparents.

Families and individuals interested in exploring adoption can go to (www.nd.gov/dhs) for a list of licensed child placing agencies in North Dakota. These agencies provide services including family recruitment, preparation and assessment, placement and post-placement support.

Williston Chamber lauds float winners

WILLISTON - The Williston Area Chamber of Commerce presented the 18th Annual Light Up Harmon Park Parade on Friday, Nov. 23. The top three parade float winners were Light of Christ Lutheran Church, first place; Prairie Rattlers Motorcycle Club, second place; and Williston Trail Riders Snowmobile Club, third place.

Floats were judged on the basis of use of lights, originality and overall appeal. Representatives from the Bethel Foundation, Oldenburg Construction and Design, and Mercy Medical Center served as parade float judges.

With approximately 20 parade entries this year, the Chamber thanks all of the businesses and organizations that participated in this year's parade and festivities.
