Ray sweeps Watford City to advance to state
NEW TOWN - The Ray High School volleyball team won three tight sets against Watford City to win the Region 8 volleyball tournament Thursday at New Town High School.
Kendra Heier rung up a match-high 12 kills and three more Jays chipped in eight in the 27-25, 25-22, 25-20 win.
Ray's Hanna Gillund posted a match-high 20 digs and finished with eight kills. Teammate Haley Hodenfield had 27 assists.
Ray advances to next weekend's state tournament at the Minot State University Dome. The Jays play the winner of Thursday night's Region 2 championship match between Hatton-Northwood and Park River-Fordville-Lankin.
Watford City was led by Amanda Mogen's 10 kills and Tori Hopkins' 23 assists.
Stanley came back from a two-set deficit to defeat Trinity Christian in the third-place match 27-29, 23-25, 25-12, 25-19, 15-5.
Stanley's Chai Pappa had a dominant all-around match, posting 27 kills, nine aces and five blocks. Brianna Holland added a match-high 43 assists.
Region 4
DEVILS LAKE - The Langdon high school volleyball team advanced to the state tournament Thursday by winning in five sets (26-24, 21-25, 13-25, 25-18, 15-11) against Carrington in the Region 4 tournament championship.
Abbey Braaten posted a match-high 27 kills and six aces and Breanna Downs finished with 36 assists.
Madison Wendel and Kayla Hochhalter combined for 27 kills for Carrington. Wendel added three blocks for the Cardinals.
Langdon plays Region 6 champion Our Redeemer's Christian School in the first round of the state tournament at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Minot State University Dome.
Rolla defeated Benson County 3-1 (25-20, 19-25, 25-20, 25-23) in the third-place match. Jordan Robert, Mary Jo Guilbert and Miranda Leas had nine kills apiece for the winning squad.
Annie Jorgenson led Benson County with 15 kills and 17 digs.
Region 5
BISMARCK - Flasher defeated Grant County 30-28, 25-17, 16-25, 25-21 Thursday at Shiloh Christian High School to win the Region 5 tournament.
Flasher punched its ticket to next weekend's state tournament at the Minot State University Dome behind Micaela Meyer's 20 kills, five aces and four blocks.
The Bulldogs play Region 1 tournament champion Kindred at 2 p.m. Thursday in the state quarterfinals.
Region 7
KILLDEER - The Dickinson Trinity high school volleyball team advanced to the state tournament after a five-set thriller (25-20, 16-25, 20-25, 25-12, 15-13) over Beulah on Thursday in the Region 7 championship match.
Alyson Schieno had a match-high 25 kills and Katelyn Grinsteinner added 14.
Gretchen Weir, Brianna Soehren and Allison Steffan combined for 22 blocks for the Titans.
Beulah was led by Jaime Murschel and Nicole Schramm, who combined for 32 kills.
The Titans plays Region 3 champion Linton-HMB at noon Thursday at the Minot State University Dome.
Beach topped Richardton-Taylor 3-1 in the third-place match.
