Minot Daily News

Shirley Leier, 82, Velva, passed away Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, to finally end an 18-year battle with breast cancer. She passed away peacefully in her home where she had been in her daughters' and sons' care since the passing of her husband, Clem, on Sept. 10, 2012.

Shirley Ann Abel was born Dec. 1, 1929, on the farm of her grandparents, John and Petra Zaback, southwest of Karlsruhe. She was the daughter of Nicholas G. and Alice (Zaback) Abel. Her childhood was spent in Bend, Ore., Verendrye and she graduated from Karlsruhe High School in 1947.

Shirley married Clement R. "Clem" Leier on May 31, 1948, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Karlsruhe. They made their home in Velva, where they owned and operated Leier Brothers Red Owl of Velva and Karlsruhe until 1954. She was a homemaker until 1966, when she became a postal clerk for the Velva Post Office for 24 years.

Most everyone remembers her generous sharing of meals and hospitality. She was a crafter of many unique items, pheasant feather hats, turkey feather wreaths, acrylic grape clusters, numerous sewing projects, quilting, knitting and crocheting. She had an endless collection of recipes, dolls, dishes and Norsk Hostfest treasures. She and Clem were always on the go, taking many vacations, sightseeing and casino trips. There was no birthday, anniversary or holiday she didn't remember with a Hallmark card.

She was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva, and its Confraternity of Christian Mothers group. She enjoyed volunteering at the Norsk Hostfest yearly and was a hospice volunteer until her health wouldn't permit.

Shirley's answer to "How are you?" was "I'm fine" is finally here. May she finally will be "Fine."

Her loving family includes: daughters, Laura (Joe) Schwan, Minot, and Lisa (Ray) Zerr, Garrison; sons, Mark Leier, Minneapolis, and John Leier, San Diego; grandchildren, Angie (Blaine) and their children, Kaitlyn, Karlee, Kelsey, Kendra, Kiara, Kimm and McKenna; Amy (Jeris) and their children, Lily and Jed; Michael (Angela) and their children, Aiden and Danica; Sara (Craig) and their children, Jayden, Haley and Faith; Luke (Jill) and their children, Kooper and Berklee; Kate (Matt) and their children, Jacob and Nicholas; and Tammy (Derek) and their children, Davis, Dylan and Dallas; sisters, Darlene Boechler, Moses Lake, Wash., Janet (Denny) Hildebrand, Mandan, and Carolyn (George) Bischof, Minot; brother, Russell (Loretta) Abel, Fargo; and numerous nieces and nephews.
