Beavers edge Minnesota-Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. - Freshman forward MaKayla Sandvold scored twice to help the Minot State University women's club hockey team defeat Minnesota Duluth, 4-3, Sunday for its first win of the season.

The Beavers (1-2) took the lead on junior Kyra Barth's goal at 14:25 of the first period before back-to-back goals by Sandvold in the second pushed the MSU advantage to three.

"Today we played really well as a team," MSU coach Sam Anderson said. "We did all the little things and won the small battles that got our offense going."

The Bulldogs cut MSU's lead to one after goals by Julie Menke and Allison Jonas in a span of one minutes, 51 seconds late in the second period.

MSU senior forward Alecia Power struck 36 seconds later to give the Beavers a two-goal advantage.

Freshman goaltender Kayla Wakelin finished with 26 saves to earn the win for the Beavers.

The Beavers play at North Dakota State University on Saturday, Nov. 17.
