Marion S. Bakken, 93, Velva, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2012, at the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva.
Marion S. Loken was born Oct. 28, 1918, the daughter of Arthur and Signa (Strate) Loken, in Velva. She was raised and educated in Velva, where she graduated from Velva High School. Marion furthered her education by earning her teacher's certificate at Minot State Teachers College.
Marion was once married to Lowell E. Bakken. From this union four children were born, Marlow, Glenda, Duane and Verl.
Marion was a lifelong teacher. She began her teaching career serving in country schools. She also taught in New Richland, Minn., at Truax Mines, Velva, Voltaire and Deering schools.
Marion enjoyed painting, genealogy, reading, and in later years, listening to audio books. She was a member of Oak Valley Lutheran Church, the China Painting Guild, and the Sew-n-So Club and enjoyed spending time with her coffee club.
Marion is survived by: three sons, Marlow (Carolyn) Bakken, Duluth, Minn., Duane (Deanna) Bakken, Duluth, Verl (Colleen) Bakken, Velva; nine grandchildren, Rae Lynn (Don) Claveau, Randy (Sara) Bakken, Merle (Amy) Bakken, Rachel (Mark) Jackson, Laurel (Dean) Hammitt, Aaron (Alicia) Bakken, Wendy (Tom) Thomas, Kara (Galen) Thomas, Brenda (Matt) McCasson; 23 great-grandchildren: and three great-great-grandchildren.
Marion was preceded in death by her parents and an 18 month-old daughter Glenda.
Funeral service: Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, 11 a.m., at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva. Due to a medical condition in the family, people are asked to please refrain from using perfume and cologne for the service.
Burial: Velva Community Cemetery, Velva.
Visitation: Friday, Oct. 26, from 3 to 6 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Velva.
Memorials: May be designated to Oak Valley Lutheran Church or Souris Valley Care Center, both of Velva.
