Minot State's Torres earns defensive honor

Minot State University senior goalkeeper Marie Torres was named defensive player of the week by the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference on Monday.

Torres shut out Wayne State on Saturday and Augustana on Sunday and has not allowed a goal since Sept. 29 against Minnesota State-Mankato.

"She is someone we can rely on back there," MSU coach Jason Spain said in a press release. "She does a good job directing traffic and helping our entire defensive effort get better."

MSU announces 2012 Hall of Fame class

Five individuals and one team will be inducted into the Minot State University Hall of Fame at halftime of the Beavers' football game against the University of Minnesota, Crookston on Saturday.

Former student-athletes Michelle Hoff, Harry Mills, Ken Vetter and Lisa Hodgins will be honored. Also recognized will be the 2003 MSU cross country team and Joe Alme, who revived the school's marching band.

Hoff, Class of 2001, broke four indoor and three outdoor school track records in her four-year career at MSU. She was a three-time All-American.

Mills, a 2004 graduate, was a two-sport athlete. On the football field, the wide receiver was a two-time NAIA All-American. In track, he finished fifth in the long jump and sixth in the 55-meters at the 2003 NAIA championship.

Vetter, Class of 1975, was a three-time conference champion wrestler and finished in sixth place at the 1975 championship for the 149-pound weight class.

Hodgins was a two-time NAIA All-American honorable mention volleyball player. She finished her three-year career MSU's career leader in kills (1,442), kills per game (4.53) and hitting percentage (.305).

The 2003 men's cross country team was one of two Beaver teams to win a NAIA national championship. The 2002 team was inducted into the MSU Hall of Fame last year.

Minot topsMandan in swimming, diving

MANDAN - The Minot High School girls swimming and diving team defeated Mandan in a dual for the second time this season on Monday.

Despite outscoring the Braves 116-70, Majettes coach Dan Hinton said his team didn't swim its best for its first Monday meet of the year.

"I think the girls were a little sluggish today," Hinton said. "Just kinda a sluggish meet. We won, but it was a sloppy win."

Minot took first, second and third place in the 100-yard backstroke. They travel to Bismarck to take on Bismarck High and Bismarck Century on Oct. 23.

Minot High volleyball falls to Mandan

MANDAN - The Minot High School volleyball team dropped a four-game match at Mandan on Monday, 23-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-18.

Majettes coach Ellen Jebens said her team struggled to put together an offense.

"We didn't pass the ball well," Jebens said. "Same story as it has been for the season. We passed it in and under the net. It's hard to get our offense going."

Minot plays at Bismarck St. Mary's on Oct. 23.
