SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Minot State University freshman defender Ryann Rafferty broke a scoreless tie in the 71st minute and the Beavers' defense allowed just four shots in the second half in a 1-0 victory over Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opponent Augustana (S.D.) on Sunday.
On MSU's fourth corner kick of the match, sophomore midfielder Zoe Fischer found freshman forward Gemma Biasetto, whose shot deflected off the crossbar. Rafferty collected the rebound and fired a shot that also bounced off the crossbar before crossing the goal line for the match's only goal.
The goal was Rafferty's second of the season for the Beavers (10-3-1 overall, 8-3 NSIC).
"After the loss at Upper Iowa, we said we need to find more goals," MSU coach Jason Spain said in a press release. "Not just from different people, but score goals in different ways. We have worked on corners and on free kicks and they are starting to come around."
MSU senior goalkeeper Marie Torres finished with four saves to earn her second consecutive shutout and a program-record sixth of the season. Torres hasn't yielded a goal since Sept. 30 against Minnesota State, a span of 357 minutes, 90 seconds.
The MSU Beavers host the Beavers of Bemidji State at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
