Powers Lake native member of Brass in Blue

A native of Powers Lake is a member of Brass in Blue to perform in Minot Friday. The concert is at 7 p.m. in Ann Nicole Nelson Hall in Old Main at Minot State University.

Airman 1st Class Ben Huseby performs on bass trombone with the Brass in Blue brass ensemble, the Heartland Brass Quintet, the Concert Band and the Ceremonial Band of the U.S. Air Force Heartland of America Band from Offutt Air Force Base, Neb. In addition to his musical duties, he currently serves as a member of the operations department.

Huseby graduated from Powers Lake High School in 2002 and attended Minot State University, where he graduated cum laude with a degree in music education in 2007. While at Minot State, he won the 2007 Concerto Competition, giving him the opportunity to solo with the Minot Symphony Orchestra. His studies then took him to Indiana University at Bloomington, Ind., where he pursued a master's degree in music education and bass trombone, graduating magna cum laude in 2010.

Huseby's primary teachers have been M. Dee Stewart, Carl Lenthe, Joseph Alme and Shelly Smithwick.

Besides the Minot Symphony Orchestra, Huseby has performed with the Omaha Symphony, Terre Haute (Ind.) Symphony Orchestra, Columbus (Ind.) Philharmonic, Richmond (Ind.) Symphony Orchestra, Owensboro (Ky.) Symphony Orchestra and Carmel (Ind.) Symphony Orchestra. He was also a semi-finalist for the 2011 Zellmer-Minnesota Orchestra Trombone Competition.

In addition to playing trombone, Huseby is active in the field of music education, having written a master's thesis on the pedagogy of legendary brass instructor and tubist Arnold Jacobs. He has given lecture presentations of his research and is in the process of submitting it to be published.
