MHS falls 2-1 to WF at state
FARGO - The West Fargo High School boys soccer team held off a late Minot High rally for a 2-1 win in the first round of the state tournament on Thursday.
MHS junior defender Ben Love scored with just over five minutes remaining in the game, but the Magicians' fortune ran out.
"The first half and really the first 60 minutes of the game they worked really hard ... they just didn't have the total package for the first 60 minutes of the game," MHS coach Cody Saunders said.
East Region No. 2 seed West Fargo's senior forward Lucas Miller scored both goals for the Packers (14-3-2). Miller cracked what Saunders described as an "incredible" shot off a goal post and into the net midway through the first half. The second goal came on a penalty kick two minutes into the second half. West Region No. 3 MHS (12-5-2) was called for a handball in the box.
Love's goal was a header off a pass from junior Aaron Bolinske.
"In a desperation deal, we moved Ben up to forward and that really helped us to create more chances," Saunders said.
The Magicians play East No. 4 Grand Forks Central at 3 p.m. today. The Packers play West No. 1 Bismarck Century at 7 p.m. East No. 1 Fargo Shanley plays East No. 3 Fargo South in the other semifinal.

Ryan cruises by Hazen
Patty Luetzen had a very clear message this week in preparation for Thursday's Senior Night win against Hazen.
The Bishop Ryan volleyball coach was frustrated with her team's lack of communication in a loss to Kenmare last weekend.
"We had such a great tournament and then all of the sudden we shut off," Luetzen said. "It was serve-receive and then we just stopped talking. If you can't serve-receive you can't get the ball to the part of our game that's a threat."
The Lions listened and got back to talking in 3-0 win over the Bison, which included a dominant first game. Ryan took the match with scores of 25-7, 25-21, 25-17.
"I think that match really proved to them the value of information talk," Luetzen said. "They demonstrated it."
Ryan sophomore Hannah Stewart had a match-high nine kills, followed by six from classmate Gabbie Bohl. Junior setter Maddie Lipp had 12 assists and nine digs, both team highs. Seniors Quinn Harmon and Dani Will tied Bohl for match highs of four aces.
