MSU club hockey beats two ranked teams
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The No. 8-ranked Minot State University men's club hockey team knocked off a couple higher-ranked teams to open the ACHA Showcase.
Five different players scored for the Beavers (5-0) in their 5-0 win Friday night over No. 6 Delaware, the defending ACHA national champion. Defenseman Nigel Dube had three assists in the game.
"This was a total team effort," MSU coach Wade Regier said in a press release. "We bought in to the team defensive philosophy and it payed off. To beat the defending national champs was a big step for our program."
On Saturday, MSU beat No. 7 Liberty University 3-1. Eric Herbel and Mike Jordan scored in the first period and Logan Herauf added a second-period goal.
"We had a great first period," Regier said. "We came out with that intensity that coaches always look for. Liberty is a great team and hopefully this win will send a message to the entire country."
The Beavers play No. 17 Stony Brook at 8:15 this morning.

Minot High's Oothoudt takes fifth at state
BISMARCK - After being upset early in the state singles tournament Friday, Minot High School senior Hunter Oothoudt won two matches Saturday to finish in fifth place.
Oothoudt defeated Fargo Davies' Marcus Osman in a consolation semifinal, and then took down Bismarck High's Willi Ulness (6-4, 6-2) in the fifth-place match.
"Hunter had pretty much the perfect day to end his senior year," MHS coach Scott DeLorme said. "We kind of talked to him yesterday that now that he lost, the pressure was all off. He played about as good as he has all year. I think if he could've played that way yesterday, it could've ended differently."
Two Minot singles players and two doubles teams qualified for the individual state tournament, but Oothoudt was the only Magician to place.
Despite taking early exits in the individual tournament, the Magicians proved to be a tougher squad collectively. Grand Forks Red River defeated Minot, 4-1, in the state-title match Friday.
"I think it just shows our depth," DeLorme said. "We have Hunter, who's a dominant player. Even though he took fifth, he's as good as anybody in the state. After that, we just have a lot of balance two through seven. I think that shows you how hard we worked that we were able to finish second. The five seniors that we have on the varsity will be missed."
