Jean Tofteland, 83, West Fargo, N.D., formerly of the Martin, N.D., area, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, at Sanford Health Palliative Care, Fargo, N.D.
Jona Georgine "Jean" Goodman was born July 22, 1929, on a farm in McHenry County between the towns of Upham and Bantry, N.D. She was the daughter of Alex and Laura (Johnson) Goodman. She attended rural school for five years and graduated from Bantry High School in 1947. Jean attended Minot State College, earning a standard teaching certification in 1949 and later a bachelor's degree in 1971. She taught elementary school in the towns of Antler, Upham, Martin, Drake and Anamoose for 27 years.
Jean married Donald Tofteland on July 15, 1951. They lived in Martin, N.D., for 47 years before moving to West Fargo in the fall of 1998. They had resided at the Cooperative Living Center in West Fargo since 1999, where they enjoyed many good friends. Don passed away on Nov. 7, 2006.
She loved her quilting groups and Bible studies and was a member of Triumph Lutheran Brethren Church, West Fargo.
Jean is survived by: five children, Curt (Michelle), Holland, of Michigan, Doug (Brenda), North Newton, Kan., Cathie (Ernie) Scheid, Fargo, Bruce (Joan), Fargo, Randy (Laurina), Chanhassen, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; 2 stepgrandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sister, Margaret "Peggy" Alvey, San Angelo, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don; brother, Marvin; sister, Barbara; sister-in-law, Vera; and brother-in-law, John.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Red River Valley or Triumph Lutheran Brethren Church.
Visitation and prayer service: Visitation today, Sept. 30, 2012, from 5 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service today at 7 p.m., both at Triumph West Church, 3745 Sheyenne St., West Fargo.
Funeral: Monday, Oct. 1, at 11 a.m. at Triumph West Church, West Fargo, with visitation one hour prior.
Interment: Tuesday, Oct. 2, at noon at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot, N.D.
