Many people consider autumn to be their favorite season of the year. I am one of them. I like spring and summer too, admittedly even a few days of winter, but I always find myself wishing for fall to last a few more days. The colors are wonderful, the cool temperatures perfect, the fishing is excellent and the hunting seasons are terrific.

No matter how you choose to enjoy autumn, the experience is always wonderful. Often it is the small things, things often overlooked, that are the true treasures of the season. Who doesn't enjoy the splendor of fall colors? Or the sight and sounds of thousands of migrating geese? Many smaller birds migrate through our area in the fall too, each adding to the wonderment of the season.

Spring has always been synonymous with a new beginning, a start to life. Autumn leads into the unknown dormancy of winter. Autumn fights a losing struggle against a changing season, but it often departs rather grudgingly. Perhaps that is part of the appeal of autumn.

Hunters and fishermen make the most of the fall season because they know winter is ahead. They realize their number of comfortable and rewarding days on the water and in the field are limited. No matter how long it lasts, outdoor enthusiasts will ask for just "one more day" of autumn's splendor.

The time to enjoy autumn, no matter how you do it, is now. Let autumn fill your senses. Walk through it. Inhale it. Look for things big and small. Appreciate it. Listen to it. You'll be glad you did, especially when the first winter storm makes its blustery appearance. It is then that memories of autumn are most valuable.

Too often today, amidst the daily duties that require our attention, we forget to set aside time to enjoy the natural treasures of our surroundings. Even a few minutes outdoors in the fall, away from a regular routine, can be remarkably refreshing and invigorating. Do so and autumn may very well become a favorite season for you too. Pass on the opportunity and it is gone for another year.
