Hat trick helps Minot High win
MANDAN - The Minot High School soccer team picked up a 3-1 non-conference win against Fargo Davies in Mandan on Saturday.
Ekow Annan had all three goals for the Magicians (8-4-1). It is the first career hat trick for the sophomore.
"When we needed an answer, he definitely answered it for us," MHS coach Cody Saunders said. "He stepped up and put three in the back of the net."
Saunders said because it was a non-conference contest, the goal for his team was to stay healthy and not pick up red cards. Saunders removed senior forward P.K. Annan from the game after a first-half yellow card to ensure that Annan will be available for Minot's next contest.
"It was an out-of-conference game, so I don't know if the intensity was there for either side," Saunders said.
MHS plays at Mandan at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Beavers shut out at Upper Iowa
FAYETTE, Iowa - Upper Iowa sophomore forward Kali Loescher scored on a free kick in the 10th minute in a 1-0 victory over the Minot State University soccer team in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match at Pattison Field on Saturday.

The Beavers (4-2-1, 2-2) had five shots on goal, but couldn't solve Upper Iowa junior goalkeeper Amanda Smith, who recorded her fourth consecutive shutout and fifth this season.
"Their defense did a remarkable job of limiting any quality shots we might have had," MSU coach Jason Spain said.
MSU senior goalkeeper Marie Torres finished with five saves on six shots.
Sophomore midfielder Zoe Fisher led the Beavers with two shots on goal.
MSU plays today at Winona State University at 1 p.m.

Knights take 8th in gold bracket
DICKINSON - The Our Redeemer's Christian School volleyball team picked up some valuable experience playing bigger schools in the Dickinson Invitational this weekend.
The Knights (18-7-1) went 2-1 in pool play Friday to earn placement in the tournament's gold bracket Saturday, where ORCS went 1-3 for an eighth-place finish. The Knights beat Mandan 3-0 on Friday and lost to Dickinson, Bismarck High and Kindred on Saturday.
Senior Ashley Koppinger led the Knights with 71 kills for the tournament and senior Billie Bangen had 72 digs.
"(Playing) the other Class A schools, we learned a lot," ORCS coach Sherry Carlson said. "They put up some big blocks on Ashley. It was basically trying to get around those so we learned a lot. Playing these big schools only makes us sharper, makes us better. We know what we have to work on for the next two weeks."
