GRAND FORKS (AP) - A Texas man has pleaded not guilty in North Dakota to assaulting a sheriff's deputy, escaping custody and burglarizing a farmstead.
Authorities say 23-year-old Dakota Calder was stopped near Northwood on suspicion of being drunk and in control of a vehicle on July 13. They allege he slipped out of his handcuffs, assaulted the deputy and fled on foot, eventually being apprehended in a wheat field.
Calder allegedly stole shoes and beer from a shop on an area farmstead before he was caught.
The Grand Forks Herald reports that Calder told a judge he is in North Dakota working in the western oil patch and commuting from an apartment in the eastern town of Northwood because it is cheaper.
