Bismarck High dominates cross country meet
MANDAN - The Bismarck High School boys and girls cross country teams outclassed the competition at Saturday at the Mandan Kiwanis Meet at Mandan Municipal Golf Course.
The Demons' won the boys team event with a score of 29. Williston (64) finished second, Glendive (Mont.) Dawson County (134) finished third and Minot placed fourth (142).
Bismarck's Jake Leingang won the five-kilometer event in 15 minutes, 35 seconds, 13 seconds ahead of second-place teammate Lane Kashur. Williston senior Chris Chamberlin finished six (16:32). MHS junior Andrew Beach was the Magicians' top finisher in 15th place with a time of 16:45.
Bismarck High's girls team scored a 29, well ahead of second-place Bismarck Century (85). Williston scored 188 to place fifth and Minot finished sixth at 191.
The Demons had the top three finishers in the four-kilometer race, led by Brittany Brownotter (15:07). Minot senior Samantha Huether finished ninth with a time of 15:39.
Both Minot teams compete Saturday at the Milaca Megameet in Milaca, Minn.

Magicians rout opponents
FARGO - Senior forward P.K. Annan and sophomore forward Ekow Annan combined for six goals and an assist in a pair of decisive victories for the Minot High School boys soccer team at the East-West Crossover on Saturday.
The Magicians (6-4-1 overall, 3-3 West Region) defeated Detroit Lakes (Minn.) 4-0 in the first game of the day before posting an 11-1 win over Crookston (Minn.) to end the tournament.
"They stepped up today," MHS coach Cody Saunders said. "Neither team was as strong as our first opponent of the tournament, but to come out and play the way it's supposed to be played was uplifting to see. I don't like running up the score, but a lot of those goals were us making plays."
Junior goalkeeper Jacob Saunders made eight saves against Detroit Lakes to earn the shutout victory and finished with five saves against Crookston.
The Annan brothers scored three of the four goals against Detroit Lakes and tallied the first four goals in the opening 28 minutes against Crookston.
Junior midfielder Jacob Schmidt scored a goal and assisted on two others. Junior forward Joey Lizner added two goals and an assist and junior midfielder Ryan Crabtree had three assists in the two games.
"Our whole team played well," Saunders said. "They knew they had to respond and they responded well."
The Magicians return to region play at Bismarck High at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

MHS places second at invite
WEST FARGO - Minot High School seniors Hunter Oothoudt and Jordin Gardner won their respective singles flights as the tennis team finished second in the 2012 West Fargo Boys Tennis Invite.
Grand Forks Red River won the tournament with a team score of 35 points, 12 points ahead of the Magicians. It was MHS' best showing at the tournament in 11 years.
Oothoudt won his first three matches in straight sets before winning a three-set match against GFRR junior Joseph Anderson in the No. 1 singles championship, 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, (11-9).
"He proved today that when he puts his mind to it and keeps his head, he's as good as any player in the state," MHS coach Scott DeLorme said.
Gardner cruised through his first three matches in No. 5 singles and defeated Fargo North senior Nathan Jacobson 6-4, 7-5 to claim the flight championship.
Junior Isaac Massey and sophomore Drew Thomas each place second in No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
"(Massey) is continuing to improve for us and has really come up with some good wins for us in the last week," DeLorme said. "Drew was out at a court site with more wind than the others and he did a nice job battling the tougher conditions."
The Magicians play at Dickinson at 3 p.m. (MT) on Tuesday.

Majettes place third at Bismarck Invitational
BISMARCK - The Minot High School girls finished third in the Bismarck Invitational at Bismarck State College on Saturday.
Majettes coach Dan Hinton said times were a little slower than past meets but that he isn't worried about the results.
"At some point, some of the girls are going to add a little time," Hinton said. "We had a solid day. We can definitely tell that some of the girls are tired and that's a good thing for us because it means we've been working it out in past meets and practices."
Minot's lone win in the meet was in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Freshmen Emily Hamel and Josie Gillund, sophomore McKenna Brown and junior Devin Scott finished the race in one minute, 46.20 seconds.

Minotauros fall in overtime
BLAINE, Minn - Odessa (Texas) forward Lawrence Cornellier tied the game with five minutes, 46 seconds remaining in regulation and netted the game-winning goal 2:23 into overtime for a 3-2 victory over the Minot Minotauros in their final game of the Showcase Showdown on Saturday.
The Minotauros (0-3-1) jumped out to a two-goal lead after two periods with power-play goals by forwards Jadin Martin and Mason Morelli.
After being shut out for nearly two-and-a-half periods, Odessa forward Taylor Portner beat Minot goaltender Ryan Ruck at the 11-minute mark.
Minot handled Odessa's first six power-play opportunities, but couldn't kill off forward Jake McCann's roughing penalty at 13:26. Less than a minute into the power play, Cornellier scored the equalizer.
Odessa outshot Minot 21-8 in the final two periods and overtime.
Ruck finished with 20 saves for the Minotauros.
The Minotauros play their home opener against the Wenatchee (Wash.) Wild at 7:35 p.m. on Friday.
