Magicians sweep Fargo schools

The Minot High School boys tennis team posted wins at Fargo North (4-1), Fargo South (3-2) and West Fargo (3-2) on Friday.

Senior Hunter Oothoudt defeated North senior Andy Ficek, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, in No. 1 singles and teamed up with senior Landon Klein to defeat South seniors Charlie Beske and Stephen Howlett, 6-0, 6-0, in No. 1 doubles.

Muscle cramps forced Oothoudt to retire against West Fargo sophomore Brady Ballweber after dropping the first-game tiebreak, 6-7 (5). The Magicians dropped No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches to West Fargo, but earned a key win by junior Isaac Massey in No. 3 singles. Massey rallied past West Fargo eighth-grader North Knewtson in three sets, 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-3.

"It's a luxury to have seven to nine guys we can count on to get wins in any particular match," MHS coach Scott DeLorme said in a press release.

MHS (8-0, overall, 4-0 West Region) used its depth to win all six of its doubles matches. Senior Jordin Gardner played No. 2 doubles with Massey against North and paired with senior Peter Wilson against South and West Fargo. Gardner and Wilson won both matches in straight sets, while Gardner and Massey needed sets games to earn the victory over North.

"We've said from day one that depth would be an advantage for us and that's exactly what we proved today," DeLorme said.

The Magicians play in the West Fargo Tournament at 9 this morning.

Tauros fall to Kalamazoo

BLAINE, Minn. -The Minot Minotauros lost 6-3 to Kalamazoo (Mich.) in a North American Hockey League game Friday in the league's Showcase Tournament at the Schwan Super Rink.

Kalamazoo (3-0) scored just one minute, two seconds into the game on a Nick Kovalchik goal. Kyle Gattelaro scored the Junior K-Wings' second goal seven minutes later.

First-year forward Lucas Oliver put Minot (0-3) on the board with 6:10 left in the first period.

"We were on our heels early for the first three or four minutes," Tauros coach Marty Murray said. "After that we kinda woke up a bit and finished with a pretty strong period."

Robbie Payne scored a pair of goals for the Junior K-Wolves, including a power-play goal in the second period. Minot committed four penalties, including a 10-minute major charged to Denis Dalidovich for a checking-from-behind misconduct.

Murray said his team was outmatched by a team that has 18 returning players and made the playoffs a year ago.

First-year Tauros goaltender Ryan Ruck had 24 saves on 29 Kalamazoo shots.

Ryan Doner, a second-year NAHL player the Tauros traded for this summer, scored a third-period goal and had an assist for the Tauros. Brenden Gust also scored for Minot.

The Tauros play Odessa today at 12:45 p.m.

Shanley routs Minot High

WEST FARGO - Fargo Shanley senior midfielder Connor Dunn and junior forward Connor Hager made it a long afternoon for the Minot High School boys' soccer team, netting two goals each in a 7-1 victory over the Magicians in the East-West Crossover at West Fargo on Friday.

The Deacons (7-1-1 overall, 6-0 East Region) led 4-0 at halftime and wasted little time adding to their lead. Hager scored his second goal of the game in the 46th minute and Dunn followed with his second goal in the 59th minute.

"The whole game was rough," MHS coach Cody Saunders said. "We got back at midnight the other night after a hard-fought game against (Bismarck) Century and then had to get up early and go on a four-and-a-half-hour bus trip. The boys were just really tired."

MHS sophomore midfielder Teegan Olson scored the Magicians' lone goal in the 70th minute on a through ball from junior midfielder Ryan Crabtree.

Shanley outshot the Magicians 16-7.

"I told the team that the game didn't happen," Saunders said. "They didn't show up so I told them that it didn't happen. We're moving forward."

MHS (4-4-1, 3-3 West) plays today against Detroit Lakes (Minn.) at 11 a.m. and Crookston at 3 p.m. in the East-West Crossover.
