Majettes pick up first region win

BISMARCK - It took the Minot High School volleyball team six matches, but the Majettes finally found the win column in West Region play on Tuesday.

MHS (5-8 overall, 1-5 region) rallied from two games down to upset Bismarck High School - previously unbeaten in region play - 19-25, 11-25, 25-22, 26-24, 15-10.

Minot coach Ellen Jebens said her conversation with the team following the second game provided the motivation the Majettes needed.

"I finally really got after 'em and I think I struck a nerve," Jebens said. "I just tried to light them up a little bit and then it sparked."

Jebens said senior co-captains Alex Bolinske and Morgan Milbrath helped fuel the comeback. Bolinske had 11 kills and four aces. Milbrath had eight kills, 12 digs and three aces.

Sophomore outside hitter Sophie Bengson led the team with 15 digs.

The Majettes return to the court on Sept. 21 in the Dickinson Invite.

Our Redeemer's sweeps Bottineau

BOTTINEAU - Our Redeemer's Christian School got off to a slow start, according to coach Sherry Carlson, but her team posted a 3-0 victory (25-20,25-10,25-21) at Bottineau in a Region 6 volleyball match on Tuesday.

Senior outside hitter Ashley Koppinger had a game-high 15 kills, 10 digs and three blocks for the Knights.

"It took us awhile to get going, but when we did things came together," Carlson said. "We came out and controlled the second game right away. In the first game they controlled the game and we were playing defense a lot."

The Knights (12-2 overall, 2-0 region) controlled the second game, as Koppinger, senior middle blocker Billie Bangen and eighth-grade setter Morgan Olson had a big nights defensively. Senior outside hitter Emily VanLith complemented Koppinger with eight kills and two blocks.

Sophomore middle blocker Stephanie Brenden led Bottineau (6-4, 0-2) with nine kills and junior middle blocker Katryna Hahn had 11 digs.
