Harold B. Ennis, 94, Minot, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2012, in a Minot hospital.
Harold Boyd Ennis was born April 23, 1918, at Tagus, a son of Richard Alymer and Alice (Workman) Ennis. He was raised and educated at Tagus, and at the time of his death lived at Velva.
He married Mabel Nelson of Tagus and they had two daughters, Jan Barlow and Nancy Christensen, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
Harold graduated from Minot State College with a teaching certificate and was principal and teacher at the Clay Center School near Lansford for two years, until he left for service with the Navy during World War II. He went to radar school at Point Loma, San Diego, and served on an LCI during his service time of 19 months. His service time was spent in the Pacific area and ended being close enough to Japan to see the smoke of the atom bomb at Hiroshima.
He returned to Minot to assume work on the then Great Northern Railroad, where he worked for 38 years, retiring in 1978 as car foreman.
His life centered on the love and concern he had for his wife, his daughters and their families. In early years he enjoyed taking part in sports and later spent many happy hours hunting geese and going on fishing trips in Canada with his railroad friends. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, the American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, all in Minot.
He and his wife spent many summers at their trailer at Van Hook Park and after retirement they spent the winters at the Fiesta Trailer Park in Mesa, Ariz., for 23 years. They made many friends there and he enjoyed the weather and played pool and golf. They returned to Minot and spent the last winters here. During the flood of 2011 they were evacuated to the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva, where they remained.
