Ernest Oster, 86, Velva, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, in the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva.
Ernest was born Oct. 20, 1925, in Anamoose to Jacob and Lydia (Ammon) Oster. He was raised on a farm south of Anamoose and near Lincoln Valley. Along with his family he moved to Balfour in 1943.
He worked on a farm for Dr. Stone near Kief. He started with the Soo Line Railroad as a section laborer in 1947. He became track inspector for the Soo Line between Velva and Portal and later between Enderlin and Harvey. He retired from the Soo Line after 40 years (39 cold winters) in 1987.
Ernest married Arlene Kloehn of Bergen in December 1948. They enjoyed 63 wonderful years together.
They moved to Velva in 1951, where he resided at the time of his death.
He enjoyed traveling and camping with his family, having traveled extensively in the United States with visits to both Alaska and many countries in Europe. His life revolved around his large extended family and he greatly enjoyed his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Ernest was a member of Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva.
Those who shared in his life: Loving wife, Arlene, Velva; children, David Oster, Buckeye, Ariz., Dennis (Chris) Oster, Velva, Terry (Deanna) Oster, Minot, and Jolene Ziegler, Hazen; grandchildren, Paul (Shauna) Oster, Steve (Kerrie) Oster and Dawn (Tim) Ward, Jacob (Jackie) Oster, Benjamin (Amanda) Oster and Amy Oster, Joshua Ziegler and Rose (Ray) Ziegler; great-grandchildren, Cali, Arin, Samuel, Amelia and Evelyn; brothers, Eugene Oster, of Drake, Jerry (Carol) Oster, Minot, and Orville (Sheila) Oster, Carrington; sisters, Eleanor Neuhalfen and Delores Odell, both of Minot, and Janice Krenz, Eugene, Ore.; brothers-in-law, Rueben (Sherril) Kloehn, Minot, Dickey (Donna) Kloehn, Laporte, Minn., Larry (Carol) Kloehn, Boy River, Minn., and Ray (Carol) Kloehn, Laporte; sisters-in-law, Sandy Oster, Fargo, Angie Oster, Carrington, Cassie Oster and Shirley Mertz, both of Minot, Pauline Kloehn, Cass Lake, Minn., and Ellen Kloehn, Bemidji, Minn. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Lydia Oster; brothers, Clifford, Elroy, Leroy, Arlo, Marvin, Victor and Duane Oster; and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Funeral: Friday, Sept. 7, at 10:30 a.m. at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva.
Burial: Velva Cemetery, Velva.
Visitation: Today, Thursday, Sept. 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Velva.
