Minot Daily News

The angels came to take Mildred "Millie" Helena Otillie Genz Schmitz to her final home on May 23, 2012. She passed away peacefully at St. Peter's Hospital in Helena, Mont., with her girls by her side.

Millie was born Sept. 5, 1918, to Herman and Anna (Koellen) Genz, in Minot. They farmed in Burlington for years.

She married Michael John Schmitz on Oct. 16, 1939, in Sidney, Mont. They farmed in the Foxholm area for years. They had five children: Marlys (Bob) Ottmann of Denver, Marlene Knight of Helena, Mont., Myron (Janice) Schmitz of Anacortes, Wash., Marilyn Miller of Townsend, Mont., and Myrna Cruz of Parker, Colo. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She has numerous nieces and nephews in the Minot area. She also has her special cousin, Esther Carlson, of Washington and a special ex-son-in law, Vernon Boster of Townsend.

Preceding her in death were her dad, Herman Genz, and her mom, Anna Genz; sisters, Florence and Elsie; brother, Elmer; and her son-in-law, Greg Knight.

After farming they moved to Helena, Mont., where she worked at Gertie's Drive Inn for years. She then went to work at St. John's Hospital as a baker. When they closed she went to work at St. Peter's Hospital where she was the baker until she retired and moved to Townsend in 1991. She lived in her own place until she passed.

Millie had a zest for life, a smile for everyone and a wonderful sense of humor. Her greatest gift to friends was her baked goodies. As her one little great-grandson, Danny, said "Who will make the cinnamon rolls now?"

She was a special lady to all and will be greatly missed by all.

Her funeral and rosary service were held on May 30, 2012, at Holy Cross Church in Townsend. She was a lifelong Catholic. She was buried beside her husband at Resurrection Cemetery in Helena.

They were the best parents God could have given to us.

Today is a special day. It would have been her 94th birthday. Oh, did she love her birthday. This year you're celebrating it with God and daddy. So we know that you'll be happy.

Happy birthday from all of us down here.

Condolences may be sent to Marlys Ottmann, 2855 South Jay St Denver, CO 80227.
