MSU's Fisher named NSIC player of the week
It took just one week in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference for the Minot State University women's soccer team to have a member honored as offensive player of the week.
MSU sophomore Zoe Fisher of Cambridgeshire, England, scored a school-record four goals in the team's 7-1 season-opening win over Minnesota State-Moorhead. Fisher's four goals came off seven shots on goal and earned her the NSIC honor.
"I can't really believe it, really," Fisher said. "It means a lot to me. ... Last year I had a really slow start to the season and in training this year I wasn't scoring much. My confidence is sky high for the year right now."
Fisher's first three goals of the game came in the first 13 minutes.
"This is huge for her and huge for the program," MSU coach Jason Spain said. "In our first week, for one of our players to win an award shows we're getting the right players."
The Beavers (1-1) fell 1-0 on Sunday to the University of Mary. The Moorhead game did not count toward conference standings. MSU hosts a non-conference game agasinst Southwest Baptist University (Mo.) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Herb Parker Stadium.

MHS collapses in soccer loss to BHS
BISMARCK - The Minot High School boys soccer team had a 4-2 lead midway through the second half of a West Region game at Bismarck High on Tuesday.
Twenty minutes later, the Demons had scored three times, including a penalty kick with three minutes left to edge the Magicians 5-4.
MHS coach Cody Saunders described the loss as a "tough one to swallow."
"We had a 4-2 lead and defensively kind of got lackadaisical and content," Saunders said. "They were given a penalty kick, which I feel is a horrible call, but unfortunately a ref impacted the game more than he should."
MHS (3-2-1 overall, 2-2 region) had goals from sophomore Ekow Annan (2), senior P.K. Annan and junior Ryan Crabtree.
"We came out of the chute (in the second half) and played really well as a team," Saunders said. "It's just a teachable moment for the kids to not let off the gas."
Bismarck's Cooper Cox scored the third and fourth goals for the Demons (3-1 region). Cole Olson scored the game-winner.
The Magicians play at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Jamestown.
