Arveda Luella Selk, 95, Minot, and formerly of the Velva area, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012, in a Minot hospital.
Arveda was born June 30, 1917, to Levi and Clara (Anderson) Westgaard, in Simcoe, where her father owned the general store. Arveda's mother died when Arveda was 2 years old. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Seattle, Wash., where she attended Daniel Bagley Elementary School.
Arveda returned to North Dakota as a teenager to live with her aunts, Lillian Miller and Loretta Anderson, and she graduated from Velva High School.
Arveda married Donald Selk on Oct. 12, 1940, in Velva. They made their home in Austin, Texas, while her husband was in the Army at Camp Swift prior to his deployment to Europe during World War II. They moved to Minot in 1950, where Arveda was a full-time wife, mother and homemaker. Donald died on Oct. 12, 2001.
Arveda especially enjoyed watching football and baseball with her husband.
Arveda is survived by: her loving son, Donald, of Minot; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Arveda was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Leroy.
Celebration of the Life of Arveda Selk service: Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, at 11 a.m. in Zion Lutheran Church, Minot.
Visitation: Wednesday, Sept. 5, from 2 to 7 p.m., in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials: Are preferred to an organization of the donor's choice.
