Beavers split opening matches
ABERDEEN, S.D. - The Minot State University volleyball team went 1-1 Friday on the opening day of the Northern State University Invitational.
The Beavers (1-1), who played six freshmen, lost 3-0 to Missouri Western State University before sweeping Black Hills State University (S.D.).
"Any time you have six newcomers out there, it is going to take a while for them to really understand each other," MSU coach Travis Ward said in a press release. "Of course there are going to be nerves early on in the season, but I thought our girls did a great job of improving from match one to match two."
Brooke Cousino had a game-high 16 digs to lead MWSU in its 25-13, 25-21, 25-23 win. MSU senior Shari Hewson tallied a game-high 12 kills.
Freshman Mallory Sall led the Beavers with 15 kills in their 25-19, 25-23, 25-19 victory over BHSU, and sophomore Emily Byrne had a game-high 31 assists and 10 digs. Hewson added 11 kills on a .529 hitting percentage.
"Shari and Mallory really played well in match two today," Ward said. "It was great to see (Hewson) show some leadership as our lone senior. Mallory Sall will be a fun player to watch develop over the next four years."
MSU concludes the NSU Invitational today with matchups against Chadron State College (Neb.) and NSU.
