Valorie Babb, Minot
I understand that the editorial board of The Minot Daily News stands on the far right, and support its right to express those views on its editorial page. I am appalled, however, at the third paragraph in a recent editorial. That the Minot Daily News would stoop to innuendo, placing itself with a radical fringe is beyond the pale.
The president's birth certificate is available on line. Correspondence with the State of Hawaii Department of Health is also available.
Short of mailing a certified copy to every household in the United States (which would not change the minds of those on the fringe), I see nothing else he can or should do. It disturbs me even more that the president's birth certificate should be compared to Mitt Romney's failure to release his tax returns. I would be satisfied if Romney put those returns on his web site.
In the event the editors are not aware, Hawaii became the 50th state on Aug. 21, 1959. The president was born on Aug. 4, 1961, two years after statehood. Several questions arise when these two facts are considered: 1) Do the editors believe that, despite the evidence, Hawaii is not a state? 2) Do the editors believe that children born in the United States to one of its citizens and a legal resident are not, for some reason, citizens? 3) Do the editors believe that African Americans are not citizens? 4) Do the editors not fact check anything they say? 5) Will the editors use any means to detract from the man who is, after all, our president?
If the answer to any or all of these questions is yes, I am appalled.
