Protecting our heritage

August 26, 2012
Minot Daily News

Robert Townsend, Minot

Protecting North Dakota's outdoor heritage is extremely important to me. The North Dakota Clean Water, Lands and Outdoor Heritage Amendment is a unique opportunity to protect our natural lands, parks and clean water, as well as natural flood control.

At a young age, my grandfather, a geologist, took me on walks in our precious natural areas. This taught me appreciation for North Dakota's precious outdoor areas, the wide plains, rolling hills, crystal-clear lakes and rivers and the rocky landscape of the Badlands. Parks are also important for biking, walking and making a primal connection with the nature.

We are fortunate in North Dakota to have clean water for drinking, but that is not always the case. For the sake of public health, we need to protect North Dakota's natural, safe sources of drinking water.

Last year I, like so many of us from Minot, was flooded. So many people suffered. I personally lost many of my belongings. I know that preventing further flooding is key to protecting our communities from future misery.

Let's take action to protect our natural heritage. Vote "yes" on the North Dakota Clean Water, Lands and Outdoor Heritage Amendment.
