Outside view of damage

Minot Daily News

While preparing to attend the North Dakota State Fair in your fair city this year, I continually heard radio ads welcoming Canadians to North Dakota and stating that the experience would be awesome.

My friend and I were welcomed with warm smiles, and the hospitality from our hosts (local folks) was exceptional. We attended the concert on Saturday evening to hear the Zac Brown Band which was absolutely awesome! The crowd was controlled skillfully by security personnel and overall it was a great weekend.

On Sunday, our hostess asked if we would like a quick tour of the flood zone in Minot and Burlington. We were curious so of course we were eager to see what our hosts had been talking about, after all, the flood was initiated from Canada.

I spent most of that Sunday afternoon crying at the complete devastation and feeling the frustration of residents who are still living in FEMA trailers some 18 months after the flood.

It seems to me that these folks have been displaced long enough and need someone to come to their aid.

Why does it appear that the flood victims have been forgotten?

We love coming down to the Magic City as well as Burlington for a few days of R & R and a little shopping but seriously, the powers that be must come up with a viable solution for these folks and soon, before they have to spend another winter outside their homes.

Thanks, Minot and Burlington for the great weekend.
