Martin Stumpf was born Nov. 8, 1918, at Mandan, the son of Joseph and Rose (Knoll) Stumpf. He married Wilhelmina "Minnie" Feist on April 29, 1942. Shortly after their wedding Martin was drafted into the Army. He served with the 3500th Ordnance Medium Automobile Maintenance Company in Panama for 35 months. He was awarded the American Theater Service and Good Conduct Medals. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 9, 1945.

After returning to North Dakota, he and Minnie made their home in Stanton, where they started Stumpf Truck Line. He and Minnie worked side-by-side hauling cattle into the Minneapolis and Fargo stockyards. They also hauled construction materials to the Garrison Dam during its construction.

In 1960, they moved to Harvey and started Harvey Sand & Gravel. He worked in the construction industry until he retired in 1990. Even after his retirement, he spent his free time at the shop, sweeping the floors and serving coffee and donuts. After Minnie's death in 2004, Martin continued to reside in Harvey and moved into the St. Aloisius Medical Center in December 2010.

Martin enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also spent a lot of time at the Spirit Lake Casino, where he made many friends. He always had a smile on his face and never complained about his life. He always felt he was blessed. Martin was member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree, the Harvey Eagles Aerie, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign War.
