Arlyn Hendrickson, 81, Velva, passed away Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012, in Minot.

Arlyn Dwayne Hendrickson was born Sept. 28, 1930, the son of Harold and Helen (Nerem) Hendrickson, on the family farm near Deering. He was baptized and confirmed at Norway Lutheran Church, rural Denbigh. He attended a one-room schoolhouse at rural Verendrye, through the eighth grade, and graduated from Velva High School in 1948.

He was drafted into the Marine Corps on Nov. 22, 1951, and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict. While in the Marine Corps, he played in the Marine Corps Band and marched at the Rose Bowl Parade. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 14, 1953.

Arlyn then returned to North Dakota and married Carol Michalenko. From this union, two children were born, Randy and Penny. Arlyn graduated with a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Minot State College in 1963. He began his teaching career in the Elgin-Mott area, where he served as a teacher and principal. He furthered his education and received a master's degree in education from Montana State University in 1966.

In 1968, he moved to Bismarck, where he was employed by Medcenter One Hospital as manager of patient accounts, a career that lasted 25 years. Arlyn retired in 1992.

He married Donna D. Whitted in 1993 and they made their home in Velva.

Arlyn was an avid Minnesota Twins, Vikings, and Timberwolves fan. He loved the game of softball and managed a softball team while living in Bismarck. He loved to fish and had a large vegetable garden every summer. He also enjoyed woodworking and making gifts for his children and grandchildren.

Arlyn is survived by: his wife, Donna, Velva; children, Randy Hendrickson (Vicky), of Ohio, and Penny Blotsky, Bismarck; stepchildren, Diane (Frank) Lynch, of Alabama, Rod (Peggy) Lynch, Minot, and Lisa (Ray) Baurch, Neche; grandchildren, Jesse (Todd) Huber, Bismarck, Holly (Josh) Cremeans, of Ohio, Katie Hendrickson, of Ohio, and Jake Hendrickson, of Ohio; nine stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 14 stepgreat-grandchildren; brothers, Lyle (LaRene) Hendrickson, Rapid City, S.D., Roger Hendrickson, of Dallas, Texas, Manville (Marlene) Hendrickson, Bismarck, and Ardell Hendrickson, Mankato, Minn.; Arlyn's beloved dog, Maggie, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Arlyn was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Dale and Robert; and stepson, Brian.

Funeral: Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, at 10:30 a.m., at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva.

Visitation: Today, Aug. 22, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Velva.

Burial: Thursday, Aug. 23, 3 p.m., at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, south of Mandan.

Memorials: Are preferred to Oak Valley Lutheran Church for the Youth Music Camp program or a charity of the donor's choice.
