Thilmer had three children born from a previous marriage: Melissa, Cheryl, and Conrad. He later met his life-long companion, Garnetta Wanner. He worked construction for many years and later as a Civil Service employee at Minot Air Force Base. He continued his employment at Minot AFB until having to retire due to health reasons.

Since retirement he enjoyed spending time traveling with Garnetta and spending as much time with family and friends as possible. He also enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow up, watching Western movies and his favorite cooking shows. Tille loved to cook. He was known for his "good soup" by nearly everyone who knew him. He felt right at home in the kitchen and his contribution was greatly appreciated when helping Garnetta's family members prepare meals when he and Garnetta came to visit them. Tille was well known for his uncanny sense of humor and quirky comments and totally enjoyed teasing his grandchildren.
