Helga O. Cross, 96, Minot, formerly of Granville, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012, in a Minot nursing home.

Helga O. Lovro was born July 22, 1916, a daughter of Hans and Oline (Haseth) Lovro in Hendricks, Minn. When she was 3 years old she moved with her parents to Bonetrail. She attended rural school there and graduated from Grenora High School. She furthered her education by attending Minot State Teachers College for two years. She taught rural schools in McHenry and Ward counties.

Helga was united in marriage to Kenneth Cross on June 22, 1944. Following their marriage, they lived, farmed and raised their family in Kottke Valley Township. Kenneth died June 5, 1994. Helga continued to live in Granville until 2009, when she moved to Minot to be closer to relatives.

Helga was a member of First Lutheran Church in Granville, the Granville Senior Citizens and the Rising Homemakers Club. She was also active as L.D.R. advisor; H.M.R. president; W.M.F. Minot Circuit secretary; Sunday school teacher and superintendent, and church treasurer. She was also the Kottke Valley School Board Treasurer. She was a former member of Our Redeemer's Lutheran Brethren Church of Minot, where she was active in Senior Fellowship and treasurer of the Radio Fund.

Helga enjoyed working with flowers, gardening, crocheting and quilting. She made quilts for all of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Until recently, Helga kept busy by crocheting doilies.

Those who shared in her life: son, Kenneth (Alicia) Cross Jr., Minot; daughter, Nyla (Svend) Sorensen, Minot; grandchildren, Kevin (Cindy) Cross, Tarisa (Doug) Brown, Jeff (Amy) Cross, Tait (Jen) Cross, Brady (Beth) Sorensen, Amanda (Gerald) Rathbun, Kelly (Lauri) Sorensen, Christina (Allen) Volk; 16 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mabel Hoff and Olga (Ingvald) Odland; and a sister-in-law, Myrtice McKisic. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Helga was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother Justin Lovro; and a sister, Alpha Hills.

Funeral service: Monday, Aug. 20, at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, Granville.

Burial: Monday at 2 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot.

Visitation: Sunday, Aug. 19, from noon to 5 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
