Morris O. Broschat

Morris O. Broschat, 92, Fargo, former president of Midwest Federal Savings & Loan of Minot, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2012, in a Fargo hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Morris was born Dec. 5, 1919, at Harvey, the son of Paul and Sarah (Leitner) Broschat. He was raised on a grain and dairy farm north of Cathay in Wells County. He attended country elementary schools and graduated from Cathay High School in 1937. He then attended North Dakota State University in Fargo, where he graduated in 1942 with a degree in agricultural education and economics.

Morris was united in marriage to Ella K. Lippert on Nov. 14, 1942, at Wishek. They made their home in Ashley from 1942 to 1946, where he served as the county extension agent and at Devils Lake in the same capacity from 1946 to 1949. They moved to Minot in 1949 to enter the farm implement business with H.H. Fisher. In 1957, he joined American State Bank to establish a new Farm Department at the bank.

In 1966, Morris was named the president of Midwest Federal Savings and Loan in Minot. He served as the president of the bank until retiring in 1985. He continued to serve as the chairman of the board until 1989. Ella died April 3, 1991. Morris moved to Fargo that same year to be nearer his two daughters and their families. He had continued to make Fargo his home, while also living many winters in Arizona.

Morris was a former member of the Minot Kiwanis Club, where he had served as president. He was also a member of the Minot Area Chamber of Commerce, Greater North Dakota Association and past chairman of the North Dakota Blue Cross Blue Shield Board of Directors for 17 years. He and Ella were longtime members of Vincent United Methodist Church, Minot, as well as the Minot Elks Lodge and Minot Country Club and he was a past board member of the Minot Family YMCA. He worked on the U.S. Savings Associations Legislative Committee for 16 years.

His loving family includes: daughters, Kay (Dennis) Larson, Fargo, and Mary (Tom Gustafson) Broschat, Fargo; grandchildren, Merritt Larson, and her fiance, Chuck Marty, of Fargo, and Mallory Larson, and her fiance, Sean Dillon, St. Paul, Minn.; sister, Eldean (Art) Ulrich, Sequim, Wash., brother, Donald (Vivien) Broschat, San Antonio, Texas; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Morris was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ella; and a brother, Fred Broschat.

Celebration of Life service: Friday, Aug. 10, 2012, at 11 a.m., in Faith United Methodist Church, Fargo.

Interment: Riverside Cemetery, Fargo.

Visitation: There will not be any reviewal or services held in Minot, however friends may sign a memorial book on Friday, from noon to 5 p.m., in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.

Memorials: Are preferred to Faith United Methodist Church, Fargo, the NDSU Foundation, Fargo, or an organization of the donor's choice.
