BEULAH - The team of Mike Fischer and Brian Mortensen, both Dickinson, outfished a field of 147 other teams to capture the Dakota Walleye Classic July 21-22. The event was headquartered at Beulah Bay.
Fischer and Mortensen were remarkably consistent. They weighed a five fish limit of 20.34 pounds on day one and 21.38 pounds on day two for a winning total of 41.72 pounds. The title was the third for the duo. They also teamed up win the Dakota Walleye Classic in 2003 and 2006. The title was worth $14,000.
First day leaders Dwight Dirk of Bismarck and Leslie Dirk of Mandan finished in 11th place. They brought 21.12 pounds of walleyes to the scale on day one but only 11.32 pounds on day two. The $1,000 big fish award on day one went to Brandon Nordstrom of Beulah and Nathan Nordstrom of Minot with a 6.33 pound walleye. The bonus money for big fish on day two went to Matt Williamson of Minot and Brent Wolschlager of Parshall with a 5.75 pound walleye.
