MANDAN - Top-seeded Fargo defeated Williston 8-2 Saturday at Veterans Memorial Ballpark to eliminate the Keybirds from the American Legion Class A state tournament.
Fargo scored in each of the first four innings to take a 7-0 lead and Williston never threatened to get back into the game. The sixth-seeded Keybirds (22-23) committed six errors in the game.
"If you're gonna play good teams, you can't give 'em that many chances," Williston coach Chip Devlin said. "We gave 'em way too many chances and then we didn't hit the ball so when you put those two together, you get whipped."
Post 2 only outhit Williston 10-9, but the Keybirds' walks and errors aided Fargo's cause. Fargo starter Stephen Howlett scattered eight hits over seven innings and stranded eight Williston runners.
Isaac Black, Caden Lerbakken and Jacob Brokaw had two hits apiece to lead Williston. Brokaw also had a double and an RBI.
